So, There's a ton of new posts here. Hope you all enjoy! I'll post another update soon, I hope.

Happiness is ...... Volunteer Work

It was so cool working on renovating my wife's new office. It's the feeling that so many women and their babies are going to be touched by this ministry that drove me to peel wallpaper and risk injury while helping pull down the ceiling grid.

I guess it's all the more special since that office once housed the biggest baby butcher in town, and that God is going to restore tenfold the years that the locusts ate away in that building. Abortion, particularly Partial-Birth Abortion, is a savage practice - one that saddens me more the more I think about it. I'm so honored that God has called my wife (and I, by proxy) to assist in this battle.

Ozzy Rant

Ozzy Osbourne has really offended me now.

Not that he hasn't before, but now he's just plain ticked me off.

He butchered something sacred to all Americans - "Take Me Out to the Ballgame".

So the self proclaimed "Bloody Prince of Darkness" was invited by the bigwigs at Wrigley Field to sing the famous 7th inning stretch theme last week. The guy was so wasted he slurred through the words, but even worse - he didn't even know the actual words to the song. What a travesty!!

Ozzy, just go away. The last thing I need is a tattooed, burnout guy who's possessed when on stage to butcher the theme song for my nations past time. Go sing the WNBA theme. At least then nobody will see you embarress yourself.

Random Stuff

The previous rant was inspired by Jim Rome. He truly is the king of Sports Talk Radio. He's my new hero.

Tommorrow (err...today) is Draft Day for my Yahoo Fantasy Football League. We're set on autodraft, but the draft order isn't determined until 30 minutes prior to the draft itself. I'm praying I get Ricky Williams again. He carried me to a first place finish in the regular season last year, and a respectable fourth place finish in the finals as well. C'mon Ricky - Come back home!!

I'm up so late because I finally organized my computer. I had all sorts of files all over in my computer, but now they're neatly organized, ready for backup come next month when I do my bi-annual computer rebuild. Fun, fun, fun!!

Quote of the Day: "So this is what it's like to be on Trading Spaces !" - courtesy of yours truly, while I was scraping away at old wallpaper.

Soundtrack: Counting Crows - A Personally Created Mix CD

Bible Chapter of the Day: Psalm 110 - there's so much more to this Psalm then I ever knew. Cool stuff.

Happiness is........Getting to sit down

It's been a busy week. Spent three days on vacation - well, on a romantic getaway with Michelle - a much needed romantic getaway. We went to Lake Placid, site of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics, and the home of the 1980 "Miracle on Ice" when the good ol' USofA Hockey team beat the commie russkies in the finals of Olympic Hockey.

But anyways, we went there five years ago for our honeymoon, and decided to make a return. It's a beatiful area, up in those Adirondack Mountains - a place that I think everyone should visit just once.

But I've been busy nonstop since our return on Friday. Yesterday I spent doing some residual housecleaning and other normal chores, combined with church. Church last night was Awesome. We had a special guest, Andrew Eastmond , a psalmist, and a guy who really has a strong prophetic edge to his ministry. This was his second visit to our church, and it was awesome. Our members (here in the cafe) from down under could also appreciate him since he grew up in Christchurch, NZ.

In the end, he took the time to pray for everyone, individually. Our church is quite small, so it wasn't that difficult a task. And when he prayed over Michelle and I, I wasn't sure if I should laugh or cry. He read our mail!!!

Have you ever had one of those moments, when you just feel like somebody you don't even know has reached into your brain and read every one of your thoughts? That's what it was like. Every prayer I've prayed, he confirmed in his prayer. And the dude didn't even know what my deal was. Very cool stuff indeed.

Random Stuff

Pepsi Vanilla is so good. But 270 calories in one 20oz bottle isn't gonna help me lose some much needed pounds.

I MC'd our towns fourth annual Hometown Community Picnic today. I told a few jokes, and I didn't have any tomatoes thrown at me. Good sign? I think so.

My lawnmower sucks! I have a blister on my thumb from mowing the lawn this morning.

Soundtrack: Jacob's Trouble - Knock, Breathe, Shine

On the Nightstand: (a new feature in my journal about what book I'm currently reading.) Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer. Wanna know how messed up the Mormon Church is? Read this book.

Happiness is........Buying a New Book

I bought a new book yesterday. I dunno what it is about bookstores, but I wish there was one extra day in the week so I can spend the whole time in the midst of new paperbacks and hardcovers, sipping on an extremely overpriced Cafe Mocha and marvelling in the beauty of mass literary publication.

But I bought a new book. On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King. I'm not sure why I'm on such a King kick lately, since a good lot of his books are dark and pure tripe, but the guy really knows his stuff about the craft of writing. I read (well, listened to it on tape) it before, a little over a year ago, and it is so inspiring. Amazing that a book written by a guy who once wrote about a rabid dog terrorizing a mother and her small son can be inspirational but it is.

Random Stuff

I thought TV couldn't get any stupider. Then I watched Banzai! Ugh.

I'm going out of town to officially celebrate my anniversary starting tommorrow.

Happiness is.........a Fluffernutter sandwich

Alright! Three whole days in a row. A new record for me.

Considering that my life couldn't be duller, I'd say three journal entries filled with drivel is a pretty big accomplishment for me. I feel special (short bus special, but special nonetheless. )

Pain Inhales Vigorously

I seriously dunno what I did.

I yawned this afternoon - one of those big, hold your arms over your head yawns. And when I put my arm down, I couldn't move my head all the way. My neck is completely stiff, and the ibuprofen I took isn't even touching the pain.

Going to sleep is going to be interesting.

Random Stuff

T-Minus 4 Days till I go away with Michelle for three days. That's gonna rule.

5 years of marriage tomorrow. Wow.

Random Stuff, Part One

Sorry if the pictures of This Place frightened some of you. The truth is, the place looks good on the web, but compared to reality, it's not very good. I guess it would've been better, had there been no mud and rain to deal with.

Speaking of rain, we had some serious rain earlier today. It's pretty cool to watch from the comfort of your cubicle.

The Body of the Journal Entry or how I learned to stop worrying and love Writing

Today was quite dull. Woke up around 7, left for work around 8, worked till 5, went to the library, and came home. I lounged around for the majority of the evening, Michelle had to work, so Josiah and I hung out reading his books and watching TV.

So now, here it is, Michelle is still working, and I'm getting the writing bug again. I think it has something to do with me getting the chance to consume some fiction in recent days, so now I feel the urge to, as Connery put it in Finding Forrester (great flick, by the way) "Punch The Keys!!"

Writing is lonely work, hard work, often it's depressing work. But occasionally, the writer feels the joy of finishing a piece, whether it by a monstrous novel or a quick short story. Both of them bring a mixture of relief, accomplishment and happiness upon completion.

I haven't finished writing anything in eight months. Dry spell? Maybe. Lack of motivation? That could be it -- even most of it. It's basically been a period of time full of false starts, and deferred hope. The writers biggest foe is doubt, and I have a lot of doubts when I start writing. The key, I think, to actually getting a piece finished is to press forward without looking back. When it's done, then go back and take your editing pen to it.

You'd think I'd follow my own advice, huh? Well, I can try.

Random Stuff Part II: Electric Boogaloo

I caught Evanescence on the Teen Choice Awards tonight. Good performance.

Does anybody else think the Teen Choice Awards are a complete and total waste of time? I do. So do Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and Bernie Mac. None of us were in attendance.

I'm halfway through Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger. Can't wait to see Dark Tower V: The Wolves of Calla when it comes out in November. (Just in time for my birthday - *hint hint hint hint* )

Random Thought of the Day: Midgets are funny. A monkey riding on the back of a midget - that's not funny. It's hilarious.

Why do I feel like Doogie Howser when I write a journal entry before bed?

I dunno if any of you remember Doogie Howser, MD , but I do. And at the end of every episode, he'd write a nice little journal entry in his low-rent word processor extolling the virtues of whatever lesson he had learned in that particular adventure.

So anyways, when I sit down to write an entry in this here blog before bed, I feel like I'm Neil Patrick Harris. But fatter.

Happiness is ---- A warm house and dry clothes

Just got back from a three day camping adventure at This Place and lemme tell ya, it stunk. It wasn't 100% Terrible, but bad enough.

I'll do as Milli Vanilli lip synced and "Blame it on the Rain". Now I have that stupid song in my head. Just great.

So yeah, it rained. No - Scratch that - It Poured and it, as one of our beloved cafe members would put it inhaled vigorously . Rain. Mud. More Rain. A patch of sun to instill hope, and more rain to defer it once more. Man, it was terrible.

We did have some fun, don't get me wrong. Sleep counts as fun, right?

Random Stuff

I finally got to read my first book of the summer -- Tietam Brown by pro-wrestler turned author Mick Foley. I'd read his previous two non-fiction books, both quite good, so I figured I'd give his first shot at fiction a try. Not bad. Vulgar in spots - frighteningly violent in others - but not terrible. Not reccomendable, either.

I picked up the newly revised edition of Dark Tower I: The Gunslinger and I'm trying to read that now.

A Sad Realization

It's August First. Did you see that? AUGUST FIRST

sigh

I don't know about you folks, but the arrival of August is a very sad moment for me. August means summer is almost over. August in New York means that fall and cold weather are a mere 6-8 weeks away. August means that the end of summer isn't only inevitable - it's guaranteed.

Of course, on the good side of August is my anniversary ( 5 years!! Where did the time go?? ) and the NFL Preseason, but still, that doesn't make summer any longer, unfortunately.

This summer's been weird - I've accomplished a lot, but I haven't done much. I have yet to read a book this summer (not counting the graphic novels I've consumed here and there) and I haven't been on a hike yet. I've spent most of this summer working at work, or working at home, or working at church or trying to recover from work.

Man, I'm looking forward to my two mini-vacations coming up (this weekend and next week).

The House hasn't burnt down yet, so I'll take that as a good sign

Last night I installed my first ceiling fan. Now, the directions do say that if you don't have any prior expierience with electrical wiring, than to call a professional.

But I'm a guy! Who needs a professional when you have manly intuition and countless hours logged watching The Red Green Show ?? So I went ahead and dismissed the admonition by the makers of the fan.

So the wiring went good - although I did use a few choice words while having trouble keeping the wire nuts on and stuff. But then the ground wire just would not stay attached. Finally I got it to at least stay wound together, and I stuffed the wires back into the ceiling.

And then came putting on the fan blades, and boy was that an adventure. Screwing into the hole, dropping screws on the floor, getting down, picking up the screw, climbing back up, and then repeating the process. Eventually, my wife came to assist, and after about thirty to forty five minutes of messing with it, we finish putting the blades on.

We turn on the power. The fan makes this horrendous sound.

*WHAP WHIRR WHIRR WHAP WHIRR WHIRR WHAP*

Apparently the cap over the wiring and stuff is uneven, and the blades keep hitting it. So I climb back up and after five minutes fiddling with it, the fan turns silent. It was beautiful.

On a side note, I'm thankful my wife is somewhat handy. If it weren't for her, the fan would've become a lovely lawn ornament, and I'd be spending tonight replacing a broken window.

Random Notes

The best news I've heard all summer - Stephen King has completed his infamous Dark Tower Saga. The final three books will be released over the next year and a half. Good news indeed.

I'm thinking of getting back to drawing a quick comic journal, and posting the entries here. What do y'all think?

I spent yesterday afternoon at Barnes & Noble and I consumed the second volume of the Ultimate X-Men trade paperbacks. This has to be the best of Marvel's Ultimate line that I've read thus far. Although, I could be wrong. I've heard nothing but good about the Ultimate take on the Avengers, called Ultimates

I wonder how many times I can type ULTIMATE in this entry....

Happiness is..........Tickling a Baby.

Random Thoughts

I didn't think Skillet would sound so much like Nine Inch Nails. Wow.

It's only in my head....

I've been quite busy these last few days, so I've made myself scarce here in the cafe. For now, I think I'm going to sink back to semi-lurker status and post in my blog for the most part. I'm working more hours to help make ends meet.

See, growing up is tough, those of you who don't know it. With college comes loans and eventually those loans come due, and the payments can be, well, as the Scots would say FRIGGING HUGE!!!

So our loans are due after being deferred for two years, and we're gonna have to cut some of the excess expenses from our budget to make ends meet for the next few months. For instance, we used to get $80. a month for spending. Now we only get $10. (that's each, btw)

So we're trimming the fat and praying for provision, and God's got his hand on us. In fact, today we were blessed with a gift we weren't expecting, so He's providing.

Wrote some poetry today. First time in years. Got the bug, I guess. I wrote three poems. I'd post them, but they're on my laptop and I'm at my desktop right now, and I'm just too dang lazy to go get them.

Cruisin' in my Jacked up Kia

You ever see a guy riding in a lowrider car? The ones with the hydraulics and stuff that makes 'em go up and down and stuff? Well, the typical "lowrider" drives real slow, cruising the 'hood while looking all cool and whatnot. (well, whatnot isn't exactly a cool word, but I've used "stuff" enough in this section and I'm too lazy to look in my thesaurus for something better.)

So anyways, I discovered how cool it must be to ride in a lowrider while cruising over to my homeboy's place from the laundromat. I drove real slow with the bass thumpin' out a Ill Harmonics tune.

And for one of the few times in my life, I felt cool....

And Now a Word from Her Sponsors...

If you haven't visited Todd Webb's Web Page yet, you don't know what you're missing.

Go to RUCKUS and buy stuff now!!

Trivia: Can you name the song the opening title of this Blog entry comes from? The winner gets a slap on the back.

Saturday Night, July 26th

1:23 a.m.

Well, today was a day! We had a yard sale, and I made thirty bucks or so from selling our couch, and a few other things (DVD's, books, etc.) We still have three dressers for sale though. Tomorrow I'll put them out again and see if I get any nibbles.

Preached in church tonight too. It was pretty cool - I really couldn't get anything down in writing while preparing, so I preached without notes on Nehemiah 1 - 4. It was very cool. I got a lot of good reaction from the congregation. I'm so blessed by the fact that God backs us up even when we feel like we're going to do real lousy.

So here it is, late on a Saturday, and Michelle is putting the final touches on her speech for tomorrow. She's speaking in a church about the pro-life organization she's the nurse for. Hopefully it'll help raise some more funding and prayer backing. She's a wonderful speaker, and people love it when she talks. I do too. (She just read her speech to me...it's awesome!!! )

Song of the Week: Terry Scott Taylor - Built Her a Cloud - (it's a song that describes my marriage to a "T")

Sample Lyric: "Though I find comfort in the Love we've found/Can't help feelin' that I've let her down/I'd do anything to make her proud/Deserves a castle - I've only built her a cloud"

Growing Old, Growing Young
I never thought growing up would be so difficult. I don't hate that I'm an independent adult, with my own place and my own rules, but sometimes I wish I was still a kid. Bills to pay, house to clean, lawns to mow and cars to fix are just a few of the every day problems I face.

But I can't really complain.

I dunno, just venting in my thoughts.

My never ending quest

Most of you know I'm a writer by trade, but I'm a writer who hasn't worked out his writing muscles much in the past few months. I've gotten so swamped in things I've been mired in, I haven't gotten to actually writing anything in so long. I used to write a 1000 words a day plus a journal entry as well. And that was even after we had a son.

My how times have changed.

*looks around*

Man, I should dust around here.

I'll make this entry About Comics since that's what I love the most (well after, Jesus, my wife and my son...and not to mention kids in general, and Dr. Pepper is pretty good...oh heck, I just really dig comics, so I'll leave it at comics are on my mind right now...)

Bought the first issue of the new Teen Titans comic, and it's spinoff, Outsiders. Very good comics. I just might be picking up at least two comics a month from now on.

Read Doug TenNapel's Creature Tech graphic novel. Wow. This guy is awesome. He's a Christian, but his comics aren't under the Christian label. The story itself has to be the best example of how Comics with Christian themes should be done.

Check him out at: His Web Site

I'm finally going to get to doing an editing project for a friend of mine. I have my nifty red marker sharpened and ready to go to town. I show no mercy on any script -- I love having the power to cut and slash.

*sigh*

I just noticed they took the clock down in this office. ARGH!! Four more hours till I'm done with work.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, the magazine I write a column for, RUCKUS just printed their first issue. Go to This Website and order yourselves a copy. And while you're there, try to get a few of the other projects my pals over at Ruckus Studios have produced. Top Notch comics (made by Christians, to, natch) at a great price.

And now, back to my regular scheduled work load.

House Sitting Dining Room

Watching the Rocketeer. I've never actually seen it through the entire way, so let's see if I can finish it.

Last night house sitting and the Direct TV goes out because of a lightning storm. Some guys have all the luck.

Have to work on my sermon for church this week.

I'll be happy when I get home finally.

Heard Reliant K for the first time today. "My Girlfriend" and "Hello McFly" are on a compilation disc here at the house I'm staying. Very cool stuff. I also have fallen in love with the Elms.

Picked up a hitchiker yesterday. Young kid, about 18, set to ride his skateboard 12 miles. I saved him a good hour and a half. I was able to witness to him a little bit too.

I left my CD Case Logic at work today, so I'm going nuts!!!

So sleepy. Tired. Stayed up too late last night. These old bones of mine seem to need more rest these days.

So glad VBS is over. I have a bunch of writing projects on my plate, an editing project and I'm speaking in church next Sunday! But hey, VBS is over, so that's one less thing to worry about. (Well, until I have to sit down and decide if I want to write the curricullum for next year, or if I want to order one again.)

But the bright side? DATE NIGHT TONIGHT!! I'm going to play putt-putt (and hopefully win) and have a nice Chinese dinner. (complete with those awesome Sugar donuts!!)

House Sitting Dining Room

Wow, what a day. I found out that my job is extended for a minimum of three months, a maximum of six. That's definitely a sign of God's provision for my family and I.

We have three more days of house/dog sitting, and I'm gonna miss it. DirectTV, fun dogs to play with, a big house and a king sized bed. I've gotten used to it.

But, I'll be kinda glad to be back in the comfort of my own place.

Last night of VBS tonight. We had a relatively low turnout overall, but it's gone really well! I'm really hopeful for what God is doing for my ministry - Him allowing me to work with kids is such an honor.

Wow, VBS is going....okay. Well, it's going good, but the turnout is the lowest ever. I'm having fun nonetheless, I really like working with kids.

I'm putting together a list for a mix CD, to use as a soundtrack for a series of stories I'm writing. Here's the List so far -

Stone - Adam Again
Film at 11 - The Seventy-Sevens
Tear For Tear/About Love - The Choir
Somewhere North - Caedmon's Call
Relapse - Adam Again
Can't Take My Eyes off of You - Daniel Amos

That's all I've got so far.

Random Thoughts:

Coolest description of Christianity I've ever heard from Adam Again's "Relapse" - "These puzzles meant to fool the fools and drive the genius mad...."
Cool Quote:

"A new idea is delicate. It can be killed by a sneer or a yawn, or stabbed to death by a quip, or worried to death by a frown on the right man's brow" --Charles Bruiner

So I haven't been able to write or post much here on the cafe since I have limited access to the net. Not much is going on in my neck of the woods - - well, actually a lot is going on, but I really don't want to talk about it. Let's just say God is trying to instill character in myself and all of my friends in general.

I have Vacation Bible School next week, and I'm directing this year. I'm trying not to get stressed out. I have a lot to do, but I think I should be okay.

Random Notes:

Magical Squirrels exist. For the second time in a week I swerve to miss one of the little buggers and it disappears behind me. I swear they're building a commune above the tire wells of my car.

July 7, 2003 10:14 a.m. Work

A couple of the ladies here wrote how much they wanted to fall in love. I have to tell ya, love is harder than you think.

Love is - - driving 25 miles to get popsicles for a teething baby at 3 a.m.

Love is - - holding the person you care deepest about when they're going through the deepest pain they've ever felt when you don't even know what to say.

Love is -- admitting you're wrong even though you sometimes still feel justified.

Love is --giving grace when you don't think you have any.

Love is -- giving her a ride to work in the morning, and picking her up late at night because she's the one working a double shift and you're the one unemployed.

Love is -- sitting through a movie you hate because she loves it.

Love is -- sitting through three hours of figure skating on your only tv because she wants to see Michelle Kwan.

Love is -- looking past all of the faults and hurts and pain and frustration to see God's physical evidence of love in your life.

Love is -- buying her a Snickers Ice Cream Bar, just because.

There's more I'm sure, but I can't spend all of my time at work on the internet.

[note: This is the intro to my blog over there. Hope it doesn't bore you]

My Dining Room

So, folks have been writing journals in our lil' corner of the cafe, and I figured I might give it a shot.

Most of you know me as Jeremy. Some of you have either laughed or groaned at my "misadventures" as the Monkey-Bot. I would hope some of my serious posts have provoked thought. But the question I ask myself always is, how much do you all really want to know about me?

I'm 25. I'm married to a wonderful woman. I have an unbelievably cute almost two year old son. I work by day doing data entry. I want to work full time as a kids pastor someday. I write stuff on the side.

But what do you all really want to know about me?

I'm not sure you want to know too much. It might scare you.

I grew up in a small town. As Charles DeMar in "Better off Dead" put it, a "Bodaciously small town - a speed bump on the way to a ski resort." And that pretty much sums up where I come from. The kinda place where if you're a guy and you don't play sports, work on cars or work on a farm, you're "funny" or "not right". The kinda place where if you retreat to a quiet place with a notebook in hand you're considered "lazy". Where creativity is figuring out a new knot to use while tying a deer carcass to the roof of your Blazer - not creating stories or artwork.

Let's just say, I needed to escape there.

But I go back often, like, for instance, this weekend. My wife's family is up there, as is mine, so we were in the old stompin' grounds for two days. It's hard going back there sometimes, because the mentality there is so small.

But hey, the coolness quotient of my hometown increased when I saw they installed a Borders in the mall. Who knows how long that'll last?

I'm rambling. I'm known for that.

Other Notes:

Saw "The Hulk" Saturday Night. Good film. Not great, but pretty good. Keep the kiddies outta there, though.

Someone I graduated from hs with is now a muslim. My wife was in Girl Scouts with her and I knew way back in high school she was searching. My prayers are with her.

Soundtrack this Weekend: The Light Rock station all the way home. Really dug the sounds of The Monkees and a few others.

Anyways, 'till next time.
